Russia warns of NATO troop deployment to Greenland amid Arctic security fears
Russia has voiced “deep concern” over the appearance of NATO soldiers on Denmark’s Arctic territory of Greenland, citing the deployment as a dangerous escalation in the high‑latitude region.

The Russian Embassy in Belgium, the NATO headquarters, released a statement to the newspaper Izvestia on 14 January, condemning recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump that framed Greenland as a strategic lifeline for American security.

- Following the Washington meeting of U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials, several NATO members – France, Sweden, Germany and Norway – announced the dispatch of troops to Nuuk for a reconnaissance mission.
- Russia interprets the move as a deliberate attempt to stoke panic and to push a NATO‑led agenda against Moscow and Beijing.

“The developments at high latitudes are a serious concern for us,” the embassy wrote, adding that NATO’s narrative of a growing threat from Russia and China is a fabricated pretext for military buildup in the Arctic.
According to the Russian diplomatic mission, no Russian or Chinese submarines have been detected near Greenland in recent years – a fact even Western diplomats acknowledge. The embassy therefore described the current wave of alarm as “artificially generated”.
